The former Porto Flavia mine is not only interesting from a historical point of view but also extremely scenic. This is especially true when you visit it from the sea as you can admire this fascinating complex set in the rock and overlooking the sea.
Even the visit inside is, however, really interesting and scenographic: at a certain point, you find yourself on a balcony directly overlooking the sea. A beautiful observation point from which to admire this extraordinary panorama.
Then, thanks to the visit to Porto Flavia, you can discover interesting details of its history. For example: Was Porto Flavia really a mine? No, to be more precise, it was the futuristic port of embarkation for the material extracted from the nearby mines, designed by the Venetian engineer Cesare Vecelli and built in 1924. So it certainly had to do with mining, but the materials were not extracted here but embarked.
Thanks to a rail transport system, the materials were transported to the opening on the sea, where the ships on which to load the material were positioned. This was an absolutely innovative method that saved a great deal of time. Suffice it to say that what has loaded in a month, thanks to the Porto Flavia system, could be loaded in just one week.
Despite all this, Porto Flavia remained in operation for only a few decades. Due to the global increase in competitiveness, mining was stopped here in Sardinia as it was too expensive compared to countries like China.
Now the Sarde and Porto Flavia mines are no longer in operation, but the charm of these places remains intact. The photos of Porto Flavia nestled in the rock in a unique and wonderful scenery make it around the world effortlessly.

Porto Flavia is located in the southwest of Sardinia in Italy, not far from Iglesias.
Many think that Porto Flavia was a mine. Is it really so?
No, it was the futuristic port of embarkation for the material extracted from the nearby mines, designed by the Venetian engineer Cesare Vecelli and built-in 1924.
Thanks to a rail transport system, the materials were transported to the opening on the sea, where the ships on which to load the material were positioned.
This absolutely innovative method allowed to save a great deal of time.
Now the mines in this area are no longer in operation and therefore also Porto Flavia but remain fascinating places to visit in this unique setting.
How to get to Porto Flavia?
There are 3 main ways to see and get to Porto Flavia.
If you want to see Porto Flavia from the sea, I recommend starting with a boat, for example with the rubber dinghy from Masua beach, the closest equipped beach to Porto Flavia.
There are several tour options offered to choose from.
You can also take a boat tour from Cala Domestica or Buggerru.
In this case, however, you will only see Porto Flavia from the outside.
If you want to visit Porto Flavia inside you can also get there by car.
Do the road as if you were going to Masua beach but once you get to the parking lot, turn right to take the uphill road.
Do not stop at the first parking but continue following the dirt road.
When you arrive at this parking lot.
Park your car and continue on foot.
While walking, you can admire the imposing Faraglione (the big rock in the water) of Pan di Zucchero.
In the end, you arrive in front of the ticket office and the entrance, ready for your guided tour.
Inside Porto Flavia, you will walk in long tunnels admiring the different types of rocks and discovering more details of the history of this place and the life of the people who worked here.
In the end, you will find yourself under the famous Porto Flavia writing, and you’ll admire the sea and the Pan di Zucchero huge rock from an absolutely privileged position.
What if you don’t have a car and maybe you don’t stay near Iglesias but in Cagliari?
You can use the public transport service consisting of the train that takes you from Cagliari to Iglesias + bus Porto Flavia link that from Iglesias takes you right to Porto Flavia.

Are you feeling adventurous, do you want to explore and want to learn more about the history of this place? Then the visit inside the Porto Flavia mine is the right choice for you.
The visit to the mine is not a visit that you can do on your own but includes a guided tour. Online you can buy tickets for a specific date and time (at the site http://www.visitiglesias.comune.iglesias.ca.it/it/vacanza/biglietteria-online/index.html ), but if you are not sure of your program, you can also buy tickets directly at the ticket office of the mine.
The choice of whether to buy tickets earlier or not also depends on the time of year you visit the mine. If you go during high season, you should pre-purchase the tickets to have the visit booked and not risk not finding a seat.
Remember that to visit the Porto Flavia mine, you must have clothing suitable for visiting the museum site and closed shoes.
The visit to Porto Flavia includes a different guided tour depending on the language chosen for the tour. You cannot enter independently and must respect your entry ticket’s time. If you arrive before the time of your tour, you can wait in the shade under the canopy overlooking the sea, where there are also tables and chairs. In the summer, it is perfect for enjoying a fresh drink bought from the pickup truck that is right in front.

As we have said, you can reach the former Porto Flavia mine by boat, but in this case, you will only admire the exterior and the charm of this building which is located directly overlooking the sea.

The former Porto Flavia mine can be easily reached by car even if at some point you have to park and continue on foot.

The Porto Flavia mine can also be reached by bus thanks to a new public service organized by the municipality of Iglesias.
The availability of this new service was announced directly on the Facebook page of the municipality.
Interestingly, this service is combined with trains arriving from Cagliari. So during the summer, you can take the train to Cagliari for Iglesias and then continue by bus to Porto Flavia thanks to the combined Train-Bus ticket that can be purchased directly on the Trenitalia website.
