Where to Buy an Umbrella in Mykonos: A Budget-Friendly Alternative

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Mykonos’s stunning beaches, but anyone who has visited the island knows that relaxation comes at a cost, especially if you want some shade. The prices for renting sunbeds and umbrellas can be very high, often making a significant dent in your holiday budget.

If the idea of spending a fortune just for some sun protection puts you off, don’t worry: there is an alternative. In this article, we’ll reveal the secrets to enjoying Mykonos’s free beaches without breaking the bank, starting with a simple yet essential item: a beach umbrella.

Sunbed and Umbrella Rental Costs

Mykonos is one of Greece’s most captivating islands, but it’s also known for its steep prices. Renting sunbeds and umbrellas can be quite expensive, with prices starting from €70 per day for two people and often going much higher. Many beach clubs also have strict rules, such as requiring you to purchase food and drinks only from their restaurant, making it inconvenient to bring your own.

The Alternative: Mykonos’s Free Beaches

For those looking to save money, opting for the island’s free beaches is an excellent solution. While the beaches on the southern part of the island don’t offer huge stretches of free sand, you can still find open spots to settle down.

Bringing an Umbrella from Home? Not a Practical Idea

Mykonos’s summer sun is very strong, and some shade is essential, especially during the hottest hours. The question then becomes: what’s the best way to get a beach umbrella without spending a fortune? Bringing one with you on the plane is not a practical solution, as you’ll face extra costs for special baggage. The most sensible alternative is to buy one directly on the island. Given the typically affordable prices of portable umbrellas, the investment will pay for itself very quickly, allowing you to fully enjoy the free beaches.

A Crucial Detail: Mykonos’s Wind

An important detail to consider before you buy is the strong wind that blows across Mykonos, especially in July and August. The meltemi can make it difficult, and sometimes impossible, to secure an umbrella without it being blown away. Local beach workers, for example, often use ropes and weights to anchor their umbrellas firmly. So, before you make your purchase, it’s a good idea to check the wind forecast for the coming days.

The Difficult Search for an Umbrella

Contrary to what you might expect, finding an umbrella in Mykonos is not an easy task. In our experience, it’s not an item commonly found in supermarkets, minimarkets, or souvenir shops. We searched in Ano Mera and even in Chora (Mykonos Town), a larger area with more stores, but the situation was the same. A casual search for an umbrella is rarely successful.

Even near the beaches, where you’d expect to find these items easily, the situation doesn’t change much. There was one exception: we noticed a few minimarkets selling umbrellas near Platis Gialos beach.

The Safest Solution: Jumbo

If you want to be sure you’ll find what you’re looking for, we can recommend one reliable place based on our experience: Jumbo. This store sells a variety of home and beach items, and it’s the most dependable place to buy a beach umbrella. We found three different models there at very reasonable prices (in August 2025, the cheapest umbrella cost €17.99).

The Jumbo store is conveniently located near the main roundabout that connects Ano Mera and Mykonos Town, making it easy to reach. For your convenience, here is its exact location on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/G8dVgTA8gECYTfBB9.
