Monza: The Royal Escape Just a Stone’s Throw from Milan

When people think of Lombardy, their minds immediately fly to the frantic energy of Milan. But just a few kilometers north lies a city that breathes a different kind of air—one of royal history, silent parks, and unexpected beauty. Monza isn’t always at the top of every tourist’s “must-see” list, and honestly? That’s exactly what makes it so special.

Where History Meets Elegance

Located only about 15km from Milan, Monza is incredibly easy to reach, yet it feels worlds away from the metropolitan chaos. It’s a place where you can actually hear your own footsteps on the cobblestones of the Piazza del Duomo. The square is absolutely charming—a perfect spot to sit down, look up at the stunning green and white marble facade of the Cathedral, and realize that beauty doesn’t always need a crowd to be valid.

What to See in the “City of the Iron Crown”

While it might be quieter than its big neighbor, Monza packs a punch when it comes to sights:

  • The Villa Reale: A neoclassical masterpiece that rivals any European palace. Walking through its gardens makes you feel like royalty.
  • Monza Park: One of the largest walled parks in Europe. It’s the green heart of the city, perfect for losing yourself in nature.
  • The Duomo & The Iron Crown: Inside the cathedral lies the Iron Crown of Lombardy, which, legend says, contains a nail used in the Crucifixion. It has crowned Kings and Emperors for centuries.

A Taste of Local Soul: My March 3rd Discovery

The true essence of a journey isn’t just in the monuments, but in those unexpected moments at the table. Today, March 3rd, 2026, Monza is caught in that classic seasonal transition. It’s still very much winter and you definitely still need a heavy jacket; the air is crisp, and you can’t leave home without being bundled up. However, during the peak sunny hours, there’s a bit of “seasonal confusion”—you might see someone daring to unbutton their coat or even take it off for a fleeting second, only to realize very quickly that the winter chill hasn’t left us yet.

Because it was still so cold outside, I took the chance to order something substantial: Pappardelle alla Monzese.

A full plate of Pappardelle alla Monzese with a rich yellow saffron sauce and pieces of Italian luganiga sausage.
The €12 dish that made the whole restaurant turn their heads: Pappardelle alla Monzese.

It’s a generous, hearty dish, but surprisingly balanced. The luganiga (the local Brianza sausage) gives it a rustic soul, while the saffron—reminiscent of the iconic Milanese risotto—creates a beautiful, silky cream. Despite being a rich portion, it didn’t feel overly heavy by Italian standards, just deeply satisfying and perfect for a chilly March day.

The funniest part? As soon as the waiter set the plate down, the people at the table next to me stopped talking. Their eyes went wide. Within seconds of seeing my portion, all three of them turned to the waiter and said, “We want exactly what she’s having!” In that moment, I felt like a true Food Advisor. It’s such an Italian trait, isn’t it? We love to look around and get inspired by what’s happening at the next table. And the best part? This incredible, characteristic first course was only €12. It’s a perfect example of how you can find high-quality, authentic food at a fair price in Monza.
