Many call Malcesine Lake Garda, Italy, the pearl of Lake Garda. Why? This town is very special for more than one reason. You can start your tour from the little square in front of the tourist port. The colorful houses on the lake are a picture that represents Malcesine well.

Whenever I see this house in a magazine, I quickly recognize Malcesine. You can take a boat from this port to the opposite side of Lake Garda to visit Limone del Garda.

But as a first visit, I strongly recommend you walk through this town’s streets. You’ll find beautiful shops for leather bags and jackets. How can you resist? 😉 (… I can’t)

Continue your walk tour in the direction of Scaliger Castle. You can admire the castle from the outside, but if you can, it’s worth a visit, mainly because of the view from the top of the tower.

Discovering Malcesine:
Immerse yourself in the allure of Malcesine, where the captivating interplay between water and the towering mountains that grace the lakeshore awaits. This enchanting panorama, complemented by the scents of Mediterranean nature, has rightfully earned Malcesine the title of The Pearl of Lake Garda. Etymologically, the term can be traced back to Mala Silex or Malus silex, which translates to Bad Rock. This reference is found in a 12th-century document where the Abbot of the Monastery of San Zenone conveys the Church of S. Vitto di Brenzone to the Archpriest of Malcesine, referring to him as the Archipresbyter male silicis de mala scilice. The discovery of tombs and Latin inscriptions venerating the goddess Isis, along with the presence of burial chambers built in Etruscan fashion on the cliff where the castle stands, indicates that the Etruscans were the first settled population here. The Lombards, on the other hand, are credited with constructing the castle, followed by the defensive walls surrounding the quaint village, featuring a series of gates, the most renowned being the Eastern Gate. Embark on a journey through history and natural beauty as you explore Malcesine – an idyllic destination offering an array of memorable experiences.

In 1145, Malcesine became a part of the Verona bishop’s dominion, gaining a certain level of independence as a municipality and obtaining the right to mint its own currency.

During the rule of the Della Scala family from Verona in 1277, the castle was meticulously restored and became known as Scaliger Castle, which now houses the Museum.

To defend itself against the Carraresi’s conquest attempts, Malcesine sought protection under the Serenissima Republic of Venice in 1400, initiating a period of stability and prosperity. The current Palazzo dei Capitani, one of the most significant historic buildings and home to the Library, was restored and expanded in the 1600s by the City of Verona.

Since experiencing conflicts that involved the arrival of Austrian and French troops, later becoming part of the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom, and serving as a quarters for Austrian and Piedmontese garrisons during the wars of independence, Malcesine joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1886 with the Villafranca armistice.

Since then, this charming village has been a magnet for renowned artists drawn to its natural beauty. Notable figures such as Kafka in 1909, Gustav Klimt, who captured glimpses of the area on his canvases exhibited in Vienna and Graz museums, and even Goethe, who expressed his emotions while exploring the enchanting Garda region in the 18th century, have all frequented Malcesine.

If you’re seeking unforgettable experiences in Malcesine, you’ll find a myriad of captivating things to do and see.
