We decided to dedicate our evening to experiencing Rhodes by night. After enjoying the daytime sun in Lindos, we drove to the main city of the island. We had already explored the Old Town during the day, but we were eager to see how it transformed when all the lights came on.

The Contrast: Expectations vs. Reality (Lindos vs. Rhodes City)

We are leaving Lindos, heading towards Rhodes City for the evening, which is approximately an hour’s drive. We want to see the main city of the island after sunset.

Coming from Lindos, where the evening life is extremely lively and crowded, our expectation was to find even more intense nightlife here in Rhodes City, as it is the capital. We thought this level of “fun” and “attraction” would motivate us to return a second night. Instead, as we see, the city is much quieter than we anticipated. The experience for one evening was positive and we liked it, but it doesn’t quite compel us to come back, especially given the vibrant alternative of Lindos close by and considering the hour-long drive.

Preparing for the Evening

To visit Rhodes after sunset, we dressed comfortably, though we maintained a touch of evening elegance, as is always recommended. The key was comfortable shoes—a bit dressier than what we wore during the day—since the cobblestone streets require sure footing. The evenings here in October can be quite cool , so while a short-sleeved top was fine, a jacket was a must to ward off the slight chill after the warm day.

Arrival and First Impressions (20:57)

Upon arrival, we looked for parking near the harbor walls. There were many parking spots available, but most were occupied. Luckily, we found a perfect spot right near the main entrance to the walls, giving us quick access to the historic center.

As we entered the city around 10:00 PM, many shops were already closing. However, we noticed that many other stores remained open for late-night shopping, showing that not all businesses adhere to the same closing schedule, especially in October. We surmised that during peak months like July or August, more shops might stay open later.

The Knight’s Quiet Realm

The most historically and culturally significant areas were remarkably empty. We walked down the famous Street of the Knights (Odós Ippotón), and it was practically deserted, with only a handful of people. This allowed us to see the street in a completely different light. There was a profound quiet, and while some spots were dimly lit, we noticed a series of lamps illuminating the entire path at near-regular intervals. It was undoubtedly captivating and felt a little mysterious.

We were instantly transported back to the era of the Knights, easily imagining them traversing this very street at night on their way to the Palace. Even the closed Palace of the Grand Master possessed a unique tranquility, a stark contrast to the lively crowds and bustle of the daytime visitors.

One of my travel companions commented on the sheer fascination of seeing the castle without the tourist crowds. It truly allowed us to see the city in its purest form.

Leaving the quiet historical core, a short walk led us toward the center, where the city’s nightlife comes alive. The evening life in Rhodes Old Town is decidedly not frantic—it’s more about relaxed strolls among the open shops in the historic center, savoring authentic Greek tavernas, and enjoying dinner in unique, characteristic spots.

These restaurants, whether steeped in history or simply featuring beautifully designed corners, offer a variety of enchanting settings—perhaps with flowers climbing high above, cozy internal courtyards and gardens, or even panoramic terraces overlooking the city. There is truly something for every taste, making the evening a journey of discovery.

Especially in October, but valid in any season, Rhodes’ nightlife focuses heavily on the dining experience in these atmospheric venues. Beyond dinner, there are also many places to grab just a cocktail or a drink, mainly concentrated in the principal squares and along the key connecting streets of the entire historic center, and even just outside the walls.

We did notice some bars and restaurants with a bit more music and a slightly livelier atmosphere. However, even these places are far from a frenetic club scene. They maintain the distinct Old Town style, perhaps featuring a very characteristic internal courtyard with softer, sometimes colored lighting, and more rhythmic music. The atmosphere in these spots is unquestionably magical, because it’s not just the music—it’s the whole essence of Rhodes Old Town that takes center stage.

Hippocrates Square: The Epicenter of Evening Life

A square that is particularly buzzing with activity is Hippocrates Square.

All around this central area, you’ll find a lively concentration of bars and restaurants. Just near here, there’s another charming little piazzetta with more venues, notably a multi-level restaurant whose facade is completely adorned with flowers, making it very distinctive.

On the opposite side of the square, you’ll find other spots, some perhaps featuring more music or cozy internal courtyards. Regardless, if you venture into the vicinity of Hippocrates Square, you are sure to find a place that suits your taste.

When you think of Rhodes’ nightlife, you shouldn’t picture a wild, unrestrained scene like what you might find in Mykonos. Instead, think of a more tranquil experience focused on enjoying the delicious food and the unique atmosphere of the Old Town.

This city boasts so much history and immense charm that it attracts a kind of tourism that prioritizes relaxation and quiet enjoyment over late-night parties. The evenings offer a peaceful contrast to the lively days spent exploring the beaches and historical sites of this island, which is stunning for its sea, beaches, history, and food. Rhodes has so much to offer during the day, so its evening soul tends to be more serene.

Atmosphere, Food, and Drinks

The tavernas and restaurants offer something for everyone. We saw beautiful spots with flower-covered facades, internal courtyards, and even panoramic terraces overlooking the city. It’s an atmosphere of discovery.

While many places offer dinner, others are dedicated cocktail bars and tavernas where you can simply enjoy a drink, particularly in the main squares and along the central streets.

Ippokratous Square is particularly vibrant, surrounded by bars and restaurants. Nearby, there is another charming little square with venues, including a multi-level restaurant adorned with flowers.

Another companion loved seeing the small, colorful squares, lit up with blue, yellow, red, and green lights, perfect for having a drink or a meal. You can even enjoy a drink with a panoramic rooftop view of the sea and harbor. The evening air is also scented with flowers like jasmine, adding a touch of fantasy and harmony.

Some venues have slightly louder music, creating a more lively vibe, but they maintain the characteristic style of the Old Town. Set in a charming internal courtyard with soft, maybe colored, lighting and pulsating music, the atmosphere is simply magical, with the ancient city providing the main backdrop.

The nighttime soul of Rhodes is tranquil, centered on enjoying food and the Old Town itself, perfectly complementing the lively beach days and historical visits of this beautiful island.

Based on our experience, we definitely recommend visiting Rhodes Old Town during the day. The city is much livelier, and you have ample opportunity to explore all the historical sites, like the Palace of the Grand Master, and fully understand its history. Daytime provides the best chance to browse the open shops, make purchases, and visit the attractions indoors.

However, if you have the chance to return in the evening, it’s worth it! The night atmosphere reveals very charming corners and lovely little spots for a quiet dinner or drinks. This is when the Old Town assumes a completely different light: certain angles become beautifully illuminated, highlighting hidden details and features, such as the climbing flowers on a taverna. This soft, selective lighting creates a unique, tranquil, and magical mood.

Our final advice is:

1. Prioritize the Day Visit: Dedicate a good portion of your day to seeing the main attractions and doing your shopping.
2. Evening is a Bonus: If you can easily return for a couple of hours to catch the illuminated medieval atmosphere, it’s a beautiful experience.
3. The Lindos Alternative: If you are staying near Lindos and find it difficult to make the hour-long drive back to Rhodes City at night, it’s absolutely fine to skip the night visit here. You can easily enjoy a beautiful, much livelier evening in Lindos instead.

The Old Town at night is beautiful, but it’s not a must-do that should replace your evening plans if it requires a long commute.
