Le Tanjia Restaurant: Between Promises of Tradition and a Personal Experience

Nestled in the heart of the Mellah, between the majestic Palais Badii and the enchanting Palais Bahia, lies Ristorante Le Tanjia, described as an oasis of tradition and warmth. This establishment, easily reachable from Place des Ferblantiers, promises to capture the essence of Moroccan conviviality in an ambiance that celebrates the local art of living. The decor, inspired by Eastern tradition, is presented as capable of creating a welcoming and familiar atmosphere, ideal for a special evening.

On paper, the restaurant unfolds over three floors, organized around a central courtyard, where dark wood blends with touches of green, creating a magical and enveloping atmosphere. And the panoramic terrace is described as unmissable, offering breathtaking views of the historic Mellah site.

Our Evening at Le Tanjia: A First-Person Account

Driven by the promising descriptions, I had the opportunity to dine at Ristorante Le Tanjia. I must admit that the arrival did not disappoint: the ambiance is indeed elegant, but with a typically Moroccan charm. Entering the covered inner courtyard is evocative, a square that, despite being indoors, gives the feeling of an open space thanks to the high ceiling and the balconies overlooking the tables below. The evening lighting, enhanced by candles, undoubtedly creates a pleasant atmosphere, and the very central location makes the restaurant convenient for a post-dinner stroll.

The much-praised terrace was one of our biggest expectations. Climbing the stairs, you immediately sense the potential of this space. However, our visit in early April held a surprise: to shelter from the cool evening air, the terrace had been partially enclosed with plastic sheeting. Unfortunately, this compromised the view, making it partial and blurred, and did not completely eliminate the drafts. I imagine, though, that on warmer evenings, dining here with the view of illuminated Marrakech could be an enchanting experience.

Dinner for our group was organized with a set menu. The appetizers, mostly vegetable-based, were a light prelude to the main course: couscous. I must say that the couscous itself was good, but the amount of chicken was definitely scarce. Finding only four small pieces of chicken in a dish for four people left a bit of a disappointment, relegating the rest of the meal to a vegetable side dish that, in the long run, felt a little dry.

Despite this, the evening was enlivened by pleasant interludes: a belly dancer performing between the tables and a lady with the traditional tray of candelabra on her head, a fascinating performance that involved some of us with a souvenir photo.

The grand finale was the mint tea, authentic and delicious, as one expects in Morocco.

A detail that struck me, going down to the restroom from the terrace, was the bathroom: very well-kept and clean, but above all enveloped in an intense fragrant vapor of essential oils, an intense and particular olfactory experience.

Final Thoughts: The evening at Ristorante Le Tanjia was overall pleasant, with a suggestive atmosphere and appreciable entertainment. However, the partial closure of the terrace limited the promised view, and the culinary experience, while not negative, did not reach excellence, especially regarding the generosity of the main course. The flavor of the little chicken present in the couscous, however, was indeed delicious.

I recommend evaluating the seasonal temperatures if you wish to dine on the terrace and, if possible, considering the à la carte option to have greater control over your gastronomic experience. Despite some shadows, Le Tanjia remains a place with its own charm, capable of offering a different kind of evening in the heart of Marrakech.
