We arrived early in the morning, leaving the car in the free parking lot, to enjoy absolute tranquility, interrupted only by the sound of the Aegean Sea. The real spectacle is the water. Agathi is a natural pool: the seabed slopes so gently that you can walk in the water for many meters. This safe, shallow water makes it perfect even for children. The invitation of this transparent water was impossible to refuse, even winning over those in the group who usually don’t like to go to the beach!

The Beauty of a Free Beach, but with a Few Shadows

Since Agathi is a wilder and more isolated beach, you might wonder if it stays clean, especially in the low season. The answer is: it is not perfectly clean, but it is more than acceptable! We are here in October 2025, so there are fewer crowds. Despite this, we noticed a few cigarette butts and some small pieces of trash here and there. Snorkeling: It’s Not Its Vocation

If your main goal is snorkeling, Agathi is not the best choice. Since the center of the bay is completely sandy, we only saw a few tiny fish. The potential for sightings is only on the sides, near the rocky headlands. You go to Agathi for its beauty, crystal-clear water, and relaxation, not for underwater diving!

Adventure and Incomplete Exploration

Agathi is nestled between headlands that invite adventure. On the sides of the bay:

• Church of Agia Agathi and Sea Cave: To the left, you can climb a short stretch and visit the tiny Church of Agia Agathi, entirely carved into the rock. Right next to the Church, there is also a Sea Cave. We got close, but the interior was dark and, above all, we were not equipped (suitable shoes, like sneakers, would have been needed), so we chose to enjoy the beach instead.
• Feraklos Castle: Looking at the beach, you notice the ruins atop the headland. We did not climb to the top, leaving this as an adventure pending, but we saw others start the ascent!

Our advice is this: Agathi is primarily about relaxation and crystal-clear water. As far as we are concerned, leaving a small adventure pending is the perfect way to guarantee a good reason to return!

Logistics and Final Tips

The lack of rental services (it’s a completely free beach) reinforces its authenticity. For us, based in Lindos, convenience was another plus: Agathi is only a 20-minute drive away, a detail that made it easy to return twice!

• Our Method: This is precisely why, after savoring the morning quiet of Agathi (which is its true essence!), we would move around noon to more equipped beaches, like Tsambika Beach, where we could find restaurants and services.

Our journey to Agathi Beach, often referred to as St. Agata, began on the morning of Wednesday, October 1st, 2025. This hidden gem is conveniently located about a twenty-minute drive from Lindos. Getting there by car was straightforward; the road is paved almost all the way, with only the very last stretch being a well-managed dirt road. Driving slowly solved any minor issues.

We arrived early, around 9:00 AM, and the spacious parking lot was completely empty—a perfect start! Even at 11:00 AM, while more people had arrived, there was still plenty of space and a quiet atmosphere.

The Magic of the Water and Sand

This spot truly is a marvelous golden sand beach with crystal-clear water. Stepping into the Aegean Sea is an absolute dream because you can walk for many meters before the water gets deep enough to swim. The gently sloping seabed makes it ideal for everyone, whether you love swimming or just strolling in the water. The combination of the soft sand and the inviting, transparent water makes any activity, from walking to swimming, even more enjoyable. This is why it’s a perfect beach for all ages, including children, as the water remains shallow far from the shore.

Agathi is an entirely free, unorganized beach, which explains why the parking is also completely free. Being here in early October meant the sun wasn’t too strong, but for those visiting in the peak heat of August, bringing your own umbrella or sun tent is a must, or simply arriving very early or late in the day. The only functional free service available is the shower facility. We found one shower wasn’t working, but the one right next to it was fine—a small tip: if one fails, try the one next to it!

Exploration and Unique Flaws

While swimming, we attempted to spot fish in the center where the water was deeper, but we only saw tiny little fish. For better snorkeling opportunities, you should head to the rocky sides, as the center of the bay is all sand. The beach is enclosed by two rocky headlands, or “promontories,” which look almost like mountains.

On the one side, there are trails leading up the hills and under the trees, offering a bit of shade and adventure. I noticed some people walking along these paths, but I didn’t try them myself this time, so I’ll leave that adventure for you to discover.

Looking at the high, flat promontory, you can see the ruins of the castle, which appear to be nothing but the last remnants. A more jarring visual note on this side, however, is the abandoned construction of houses near the beach. These ruderal buildings are thankfully partially covered by vegetation, allowing you to quickly divert your gaze back to the true beauty of the crystal-clear water.

This is a beach for lovers of the sea, transparency, and soft sand—a slice of the island’s wilder, more authentic side. It’s for those ready to forgo the convenience of sunbeds and restaurants to enjoy its sheer, free beauty. We are here in October 2025 with less traffic, and while the beach is not perfectly clean—we spotted cigarette butts and small bits of trash—it remains acceptable. The Little Moments That Matter

The real difference, however, lies in the small moments. We enjoyed relaxing on the soft sand, just listening to the waves. One of those unforgettable, poetic moments occurred when a tiny ladybug flew down and landed right on my towel. It didn’t want to leave, so I had to take a picture of this little red creature with black spots on the golden sand. After taking the photo, I passed it to a friend, who let it walk on his skin, before it eventually got tired and went on its own way.

Near the little church of Agia Agathi, which gives the beach its name, there is also a sea cave/grotto. We walked to that area but didn’t enter, as it was quite dark and we didn’t have the appropriate gear (like sneakers). Also, remember that you must be appropriately dressed to enter the church; if you are only in your swimsuit, you will not be allowed inside.

Towards the castle ruins, you can see stairs from the road leading up to the promontory. We saw people attempting the climb, so if you are keen, you can try to venture up there.

My final advice is to arrive in the morning. When many people start showing up around noon, the tranquil, wild character of Agathi, which is its true essence, is lost. That is precisely why we would often move to more equipped beaches like Tsambika Beach around midday after savoring the morning quiet, ensuring we got the best of both worlds.
