The idea of enjoying the sunset in Mykonos can, however, take on an almost “commercial” feel. The island is famous for its chic venues and panoramic bars where, to secure a front-row seat, you often have to book well in advance, pay a deposit, and meet a minimum spend. Don’t get me wrong, treating yourself to a special evening in an elegant place is a pleasure I recommend, especially for an important occasion or for your last night on the island. But it’s essential to know that it’s not the only way to experience this magic.
More than an Activity, an Emotion: My Thoughts on the Sunset
Sometimes you tend to think of the sunset as something to watch only when you’re on vacation, but in reality, it should be a habit, a small gift to be enjoyed every time you get the chance. What I learned in Mykonos is that you don’t have to obsessively search for the “best spot” for the sunset. Being informed and planning a little is useful, but it shouldn’t become a race against time. Otherwise, you lose the spontaneity and, consequently, the magic of the moment itself.

Where Does the Sun Set in Mykonos?
First of all, it’s helpful to know that the sun in Mykonos sets right in front of Mykonos Town, the island’s capital also known as Chora. This geographical location makes the town the ideal observation point, with the sun slowly sinking below the horizon, painting the sea and sky with incredible colors. If you’re already in the center of Chora, just head towards the sea at sunset to enjoy the show and then, once the sun has set, head back into the fascinating, illuminated alleys for a magical walk.

1. Little Venice and the Windmills. These are undoubtedly the most iconic and photographed spots on the entire island. Little Venice, with its houses on the sea and colorful balconies, offers a magical view. Right in front of you, the sun sets as the lights of Chora begin to turn on. A short distance away, the windmills of Mykonos, an undisputed symbol of the island, complete a postcard-perfect panorama. It’s a fantastic and completely free observation point, although it can get very crowded during high season. The atmosphere is unique, and the view of the town and the sea is unforgettable. You can bring a snack and a drink from the supermarket for an inexpensive and memorable aperitivo.
2. On a Boat, Returning from Delos. If you want an even more unique and evocative perspective, I recommend watching the sunset from the sea. It might seem like an expensive option, but it’s not. If you decide to visit the historic island of Delos (which I highly recommend to enrich your travel experience and explore not only beaches but also history), take the boat in the afternoon. On the return trip to Mykonos Town, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets of your life, with the sun plunging into the open sea. And at the same time, you’ll be able to admire Mykonos Town from a completely different perspective. What could be better? An experience that combines culture, history, and the beauty of nature.
3. The Roads Above Chora. Mykonos is not a flat island; it’s full of hills and headlands. When you drive up to the high part of Chora, perhaps to reach the parking lot, you’ll have the chance to stop at exceptional panoramic viewpoints. From the road, in your car, you can admire a breathtaking panorama, with the town gradually lighting up and the sea reflecting the last lights of the day. Another thing I discovered is that the most beautiful sunsets aren’t always the planned ones. I happened to see spectacular sunsets quite unexpectedly while heading to other beaches for dinner. On these winding little roads, at some point, you see the sea, and you find yourself in front of a breathtaking panorama. These moments, stolen from the vacation routine, have a special flavor. Sometimes, even if I didn’t stop for a photo, maybe because there were other cars behind me or because I simply wanted to fully capture the moment without using my phone, these are the sunsets that will remain etched in my heart and mind. The true magic of Mykonos is also hidden in the simplest details and in random discoveries.
When the Sunset Becomes an Exclusive Experience: Numi Sunset Bar
As mentioned, sometimes a romantic evening or a special occasion deserves an extra expense. During my last trip to Mykonos, we wanted to treat ourselves to a special evening for our last night on the island. The Numi Sunset Bar, located in a high position with an incredible view, was on our list. However, reservations seemed complicated and unclear: a minimum spend, specific times, different areas of the venue with different offers, and the need for a deposit on the website. Our decision was to try our luck without a reservation, as we weren’t sure of the time. We also had several other options for a special evening; we could have enjoyed the sunset and then gone to the beach for a special dinner.
We arrived around 8:00 PM, right at sunset. To our surprise, we found a fantastic spot with a beautiful view. We started with an aperitif and then continued with a light dinner of tartare and two sushi dishes. In this venue, there is no mandatory minimum spend, but if you want to fully enjoy the evening with drinks and food, you need to budget for at least 100 euros per person. It was worth it, as we were able to watch both the sunset and Mykonos Town light up.
If you don’t find free parking, you can use the valet parking service just below the venue for about 20 euros per evening. But at that point, who cares about the money? And if you’re wearing high heels like I was, the proximity is priceless!
The experience was enhanced by the presence of a DJ and an electronic violinist. The music, similar to disco music but not intrusive, created a truly pleasant atmosphere. Our only “disappointment” was that we didn’t want to leave!
This venue is ideal if you not only want to admire the sunset but also spend an entire evening enjoying good music and a breathtaking panorama. Despite the cost, the experience was fully satisfying.
