Can you actually cross from Europe to Asia for just a few euros? In Istanbul, it’s not only possible—it’s unforgettable. Discover how a simple ferry ride across the Bosphorus offers the best views of the Galata Tower and the colorful charm of the Asian side. Even with an unexpected chilly May breeze, this is a must-do, budget-friendly adventure to treasure forever.

Text: A city on two continents? Possible? Yes, for Istanbul! On the Bosphorus, one side is in Europe and the other in Asia—two worlds connected by a simple ferry ride.

Choose the Üsküdar Hatti Line at Eminönü Pier. You don’t need to buy your ticket in advance because you can pay directly when you pass through the turnstiles.

It costs just a few euros (you can conveniently use your Istanbulkart or even a contactless credit card to board), and in just a few minutes, you are on another continent: the feeling is priceless. How could we miss such an experience?

Leaving the European side by boat, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the Galata district, with the ancient Galata Tower standing tall against the skyline. It’s the ultimate spot for that perfect shot!

As you can see, the Galata district is just a short walk across the bridge from Eminönü Pier, so when you return from the Asian side, you can easily explore it on foot just like we did. And why not treat yourself to a sweet pastry to recharge your energy? After all, today you’ve visited two continents!

But sorry, Gabriel, you’ll have to wait for that cake! Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s hop back onto our boat for the unique adventure that takes us from Europe to Asia with just a short ferry ride.

Once on the Asian side, we wandered through Istanbul’s colorful Ottoman houses in the charming Kuzguncuk neighborhood and uncovered its hidden gems. You can pay for the bus ride directly on board using your Istanbulkart or a credit card, just like boarding the boat.

Despite the crowds and an unexpectedly cold, windy May, which made me choose to stay inside the boat rather than on the open top deck, giving up on the best spot to enjoy that beautiful view, sharing this adventure—and the incredible flavors of Turkish cuisine—with friends made every moment truly unforgettable. A simple but meaningful experience to treasure in our hearts forever.

In fact, our entire journey actually started in Asia. We landed at SAW airport and stayed in Sultanahmet, which meant our transfer van crossed the intercontinental bridge by road. But when you’re stuck in heavy traffic for two hours upon arrival (though luckily, it was only an hour on the way back!), you don’t really feel the magic of switching continents.

You just feel tired and hungry. The funny thing was that Gabriel was already trying to check out the menu outside the restaurant directly from the van, before even getting out!

That is why experiencing it from the water is so different. On the ferry, you aren’t just moving from point A to point B—you are truly living the moment.” 🌬️🤝🥙

Wandering the Sheltered Streets of Kuzguncuk

As we strolled through the picturesque neighborhood of Kuzguncuk, you could definitely tell from our heavy jackets that May surprised us with some pretty chilly weather! That didn’t stop the locals and brave travelers, though—people were still sitting outside enjoying their meals along the charming, tree-lined streets.

The inner streets offered a lovely shelter from the wind, making it feel surprisingly cozy despite the cold. However, whenever we stepped closer to the waterfront, the temperature dropped instantly. In the photo above, I was walking right behind everyone with my own hood pulled up to stay warm, capturing this candid moment as Gabriel walked ahead of us and our friend pulled his hood up tight against the brisk air.

Even though outdoor dining looked tempting, we opted for a warm table inside for lunch this time around. Eating outdoors under Kuzguncuk’s historic wooden houses is high on our bucket list for our next trip to Istanbul—preferably when the spring weather decides to be a little warmer!

A brisk May walk in Kuzguncuk: capturing Gabriel and our friends from behind as we explored the neighborhood.
